Call for Men: Brooklyn & Harlem

image-asset.jpeg

We are currently seeking men to join our All Kings communities in Harlem and Brooklyn.

All men over the age of 28 are welcome to apply — those with incarceration experience and those without. (See below for details on how our communities work.)

Initiation trainings will be held in New York City on March 6-7, 2020 and April 4-5, 2020. CLICK HERE TO APPLY.

HOW DOES ALL KINGS WORK?

All Kings creates communities of men to support each other and justice-involved young men.

All men are encouraged to participate — we prioritize creating intergenerational communities across difference. Our work begins with brotherhood. We connect with each other, and learn to support each other in growth, and in becoming men of integrity and accountability.

We do our work together. Our belief is that if we are real and vulnerable together, we will naturally teach each other, and better be able to serve our families, friends, and neighborhoods.

Once each local All Kings community is established, it connects with reentry service organizations to welcome and support young men involved in the justice-system. We give them mentorship and a supportive community of men — something many of the young men never had. We don’t change these young men or teach them. We welcome them into our brotherhood and give them an opportunity to do their work alongside us, as men.

The program consists of three pillars:

  • The Quest -- a 3-day transformative weekend, in which older men (over aged 28) support younger men in discovering their identity and purpose

  • Mentorship Program -- A twelve-week mentorship program, in which men from the community help young men integrate and build on the lessons of the weekend

  • Work Circles -- Weekly “work circles” provide the opportunity for the men, young and old, to examine their challenges and grow together

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are currently seeking men over the age of 28 to join our Harlem and Brooklyn communities. There are no qualifications to join — we expect that every man has a contribution to make, and that we will grow and learn together. We do hope that men who join will consider stepping up to mentor young men. As a mentor, you will be a young man’s base of support, his guide, and his primary contact to the community.

As a member of All Kings, you will also have the opportunity to be a part of the team for future All Kings weekends, a great way to learn the model and our processes, and learn from our lead trainers.

HOW DO I JOIN AN ALL KINGS COMMUNITY?

To join an All Kings community, we ask men make two commitments:

  • Attend an All Kings Initiation in New York City (either March 6-7 or April 4-5)

  • Attend at least 4 weekly circles in the two months after the initiation

We ask that men help cover the costs of their All Kings training with a donation of $50-150, based on income. Scholarships are also available. No man will be turned away for lack of funds.

WHAT IS THE INITIATION TRAINING LIKE?

As an older man (over 28), you will attend the weekend to experience your own introduction to our work and community. The training is a modified version of our Quest weekend, for older men and future mentors. One of our core principles is that we never ask a young man to do anything that we haven’t already done ourselves.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE AN ALL KINGS MAN?

Following your Initiation, you will enter the All Kings community, and join our weekly circles and support network. If you chose, you can also engage in leadership training and begin the preparation to mentor a young man. Mentors are trained according to a unique curriculum, to be able to work effectively and compassionately with young men.

Once you step up to mentor a young man, you will meet with your mentee for 1 hour per week for 12 weeks. Each meeting has a different purpose and structure. To support you through the mentoring process, you’ll be given an advisor, to help you structure your experiences with your mentee and navigate any difficult situations that come up.

All Kings is not a small commitment. We ask that men enter the community with the intention to serve.
